  • LIFT TOTTENHAM

Our team have travelled the world, leading not only to the discovery of fantastic artists delivering exceptional work but also innovative models of practice and engagement, working with young people and wider communities to create remarkable pieces of theatre. In 2015, we decided to focus this work in Tottenham and embarked upon a long-term programme of activity. Since then, we have been working with local schools, artists, young people, arts organisations and the local council and bringing them together with international artists and companies, building partnerships and developing critically-acclaimed commissions which celebrate everything Tottenham is.

    SESSION

SESSION is a landmark collaborative performance celebrating London’s Afrobeats scene and was one of three Tottenham originals in our LIFT 2018 festival. The process started over two years ago when celebrated British choreographer Dan Canham spent a few weeks getting to know all our friends in Tottenham.

In this explosive outdoor gathering Still House join forces with Tottenham’s Steppaz Performing Arts Academy and North London’s Afrobeats powerhouse, Empire Sounds to create an exhilarating night of dance and live music where everyone is welcome.

SESSION took place at Bernie Grant Arts Centre from 22 – 30 June during our LIFT 2018 festival and toured to The Station in Bristol from 27-29 July before returning to London at the National Theatre’s River Stage on 10 and 11 August.

'THE COMPLEX CHOREOGRAPHY, UNSTOPPABLE SPIRIT AND COMMITMENT OF THESE YOUNG PERFORMERS IS BEYOND IMPRESSIVE. LIFE AFFIRMING!'

    Tottenham Artist Hangouts

The Artists Hangouts are LIFT’s series of pop-up networking events for artists, makers, creators, performers and anyone interested in chatting about the brilliant cultural scene in the area.

We held our first Artists Hangout at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in March 2015 as an opportunity to meet and engage with local artists, with a particular focus on establishing artists to work with Mammalian Diving Reflex on our UpLIFTers project. Since then, we’ve seen over 300 local artists from a wide range of disciplines come together in evenings full of provocation, networking, exchange, debate and inspiration.

Please also join our Tottenham Artist Hangout Facebook group where you can find Tottenham friends, collaborators, audiences, hear about what’s going on in the area and more.

I left feeling very inspired and optimistic for the future of the arts and the community in Tottenham, so many engaged and active people are involved.

    UpLIFTers

Starting in 2015 UpLIFTers is an artistic collaboration between two Tottenham schools; Duke’s Aldridge Academy School and The Vale School, LIFT and a LIFT commission, conceived and co-directed by Darren O’Donnell and Alice Fleming. This five-year artistic partnership will introduce young students to the arts – inspiring, supporting and enabling them to create their own participatory arts experiences with and for the local community.

The programme will primarily target a cohort of 30+ students and will focus on teaching the skills of basic event production (conceiving, planning, scheduling, budgeting, promoting, executing, de-briefing) and how to work and collaborate with local organisations and businesses to create locally focussed events. Working with them for their entire school career, the UpLIFTers‘ activity will strengthen and build the local community, as the wider school, family, friends and other members engage and support the students in their creative adventures.

Nightwalks with Teenagers, our LIFT 2018 production, was created in collaboration with our UpLIFTers, find out more about the show here.

Scroll down to see what the UpLIFTers got up to in year 1 and 2 of the project.
