LIFT 2018 to feature two productions as part of 14-18 NOW’s final season
22nd January 2018
We’re delighted to announce our partnership with 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary, in their final season of extraordinary events with two LIFT 2018 productions, Fly By Night and These Rooms.
Fly By Night by Duke Riley will take place at dusk above the river Thames, paying homage to some of the First World War’s unsung heroes: the military pigeons that played crucial roles delivering messages between distant personnel. The call of a whistle provides the signal for over 1000 trained pigeons to emerge from their coop and soar, swoop and glide through the skies, with the leg bands that once carried vital messages replaced by tiny LED lights to create a glorious spectacle in the evening sky. This public artwork was originally presented by Riley and Creative Time in New York City’s Brooklyn Navy Yard in 2016.
Co-commissioned by LIFT, 14-18 NOW, Peabody, Greenwich+Docklands International Festival and London Borough of Bexley. Originally commissioned by Creative Time.

These Rooms by ANU and CoisCéim Dance Theatre is an immersive blend of theatre, dance and visual art from David Bolger, Owen Boss and Louise Lowe that tells two stories of Dublin’s North King Street massacre in April 1916: those of the civilians who were victims of and witness to the massacre, and those of the men of the South Staffordshire Regiment who committed the act. Created by two of Ireland’s most original companies, These Rooms received unanimous critical acclaim when it was first presented in a dilapidated Dublin building in 2016, wholly reimagined for London and its new location of Shoreditch Town Hall, this riveting work sheds new light on a pivotal moment in British-Irish relations.
Co-commissioned by LIFT, 14-18 NOW and Shoreditch Town Hall.
